Welcome to Gutenberg

Of Mountains & Printing Presses

The goal of this new editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable. This whole post is composed of pieces of content—somewhat similar to LEGO bricks—that you can move around and interact with. Move your cursor around and you’ll notice the different blocks light up with outlines and arrows. Press the arrows to reposition blocks quickly, without fearing about losing things in the process of copying and pasting.

What you are reading now is a text block the most basic block of all. The text block has its own controls to be moved freely around the post…

… like this one, which is right aligned.

Headings are separate blocks as well, which helps with the outline and organization of your content.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Handling images and media with the utmost care is a primary focus of the new editor. Hopefully, you’ll find aspects of adding captions or going full-width with your pictures much easier and robust than before.

Beautiful landscape
If your theme supports it, you’ll see the “wide” button on the image toolbar. Give it a try.

Try selecting and removing or editing the caption, now you don’t have to be careful about selecting the image or other text by mistake and ruining the presentation.

The Inserter Tool

Imagine everything that WordPress can do is available to you quickly and in the same place on the interface. No need to figure out HTML tags, classes, or remember complicated shortcode syntax. That’s the spirit behind the inserter—the (+) button you’ll see around the editor—which allows you to browse all available content blocks and add them into your post. Plugins and themes are able to register their own, opening up all sort of possibilities for rich editing and publishing.

Go give it a try, you may discover things WordPress can already add into your posts that you didn’t know about. Here’s a short list of what you can currently find there:

  • Text & Headings
  • Images & Videos
  • Galleries
  • Embeds, like YouTube, Tweets, or other WordPress posts.
  • Layout blocks, like Buttons, Hero Images, Separators, etc.
  • And Lists like this one of course :)

Visual Editing

A huge benefit of blocks is that you can edit them in place and manipulate your content directly. Instead of having fields for editing things like the source of a quote, or the text of a button, you can directly change the content. Try editing the following quote:

The editor will endeavor to create a new page and post building experience that makes writing rich posts effortless, and has “blocks” to make it easy what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery.

Matt Mullenweg, 2017

The information corresponding to the source of the quote is a separate text field, similar to captions under images, so the structure of the quote is protected even if you select, modify, or remove the source. It’s always easy to add it back.

Blocks can be anything you need. For instance, you may want to add a subdued quote as part of the composition of your text, or you may prefer to display a giant stylized one. All of these options are available in the inserter.

You can change the amount of columns in your galleries by dragging a slider in the block inspector in the sidebar.

Media Rich

If you combine the new wide and full-wide alignments with galleries, you can create a very media rich layout, very quickly:

Accessibility is important — don’t forget image alt attribute

Sure, the full-wide image can be pretty big. But sometimes the image is worth it.

The above is a gallery with just two images. It’s an easier way to create visually appealing layouts, without having to deal with floats. You can also easily convert the gallery back to individual images again, by using the block switcher.

Any block can opt into these alignments. The embed block has them also, and is responsive out of the box:

You can build any block you like, static or dynamic, decorative or plain. Here’s a pullquote block:

Code is Poetry

Howto use SSH with CVS via PuTTY

PuTTY is a free application that implementation and facilitate the Telnet and SSH protocol for Win32 platforms. Plink is a command-line interface to the PuTTY back-end. Along with PuTTY the PuTTY Key Generator and the PuTTY Authentication Agent are products in combination that accomplish the task with CVS and optionally ANT and a working security layer to your build your application here as an example in a JAVA environment.

In easy words basic software crypto security while communicating with an online service.

Howto prerequisites :

PuTTY : Free implementation of Telnet and SSH.
CVS : A Concurrent Versions System.
ANT : Part of the Apache Jakarta Project.

There are three stages in building a secure and generic make environment.

  • Enable the SSH protocol and this is done by setting up an automated log on procedure.
  • Store a public key on the server to make sure SSH communication is not rejected by the server.
  • Develop an appropriate target in your ‘make’ environment to checkout files.

A fourth step is included in this blog but only relevant if your build environment is ANT.

Automated SSH logon procedure

The automated procedure is based on the PuTTY products. Usally when one open a telnet connection the contacted server asks for an user id and a password to authenticate and validate integrity. This is a problem one want to automate his/hers CVS checkout procedures. To bypass this obstacle in a secure fashion you will want to generate a RSA key-pair and make PuTTY recognize those an ensure that they are uses as passphrase.

[acc_item title=”Step 1: Generate RSA key”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click puttygen.exe

Press the Generate button.

Move the mouse around (random seeding).

Enter a passphrase.

Store both keys locally.

Copy the key to the clipboard.[/column]

[column col=”1/4″]howto_puttygen[/column][/acc_item]

[acc_item title=”Step 2: Create a reusable session”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click putty.exe

Create a session and select SSH as the protocol to use.

Click authentication in the tree to the left.

Browse to locate your private key.

Save the session under a meaningful name.[/column]

[column col=”1/4″]howto_putty[/column][/acc_item]

[acc_item title=”Step 3: Setup authentication”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click pageant.exe

The Agent should now be active in the system tray.

Click to open the Agent.

Click Add Key and browse to locate your private key.

[column col=”1/4″]howto_pageant[/column][/acc_item]

[acc_item title=”Step 4: Activate keys for automation”]The Agent must start-up along with windows in order to seamlessly complete an automate checkout.

Create a shortcut for pageant.exe, right click and edit the shortcut’s properties.

Add the path to destination path to your private key(s).

Notice if your key(s) are protected by a passphrase you will be prompted on startup…[/acc_item]

All steps above are required if you use simple .bat scripts or an ANT build environment. To sum up the neat little util PuTTY Authentication Agent does all the magic.

Store public key on server

Telnet to the CVS server. The server is a linux platform so you start in your home directory.
Create the folder ‘.ssh’ (if it does not exist already) and make sure properties are reasonable. Inside ‘.ssh’ create the file authorized_keys (if it does not exist already).

You can edit and append your public key to this file by typing :

vi authorized_keys
Double click your mouse to paste the clipboard (public key) and press esc.

Now the server will recognize your automated logon procedure and you are able to use the CVS Win32 client to gain secure access to the concurrent versions system.

Build environment

When the CVS Win32 client is to access a remote repository by our automated log on procedure usage of the PuTTY application Plink is required. Plink is the command line tool representation of PuTTY. Since PuTTY is a GUI application it is not designed to interpret terminal control codes send from the server. This was introduced in the Plink application and Plink is sufficient for us to accomplish our goal.

As for the CVS Win32 client, Plink needs to be added to the environment PATH variable. Lets assume that the cvs.exe and plink.exe applications are stored in the folder E:util the command would look like below. Adjust the path in accordance to your own environment.

set PATH=E:util;%PATH%

Batch script environment

We have to tell the CVS Win32 client to use the Plink application. Furthermore we need to define what protocol to use, who should access the server, where the CVS server is located etc.

set CVS_RSH=plink.exe

set PROTOCOL=ext
set USERID=userid
set URL=ip_or_url
set CVS_LOCATION=/usr/local/cvs/repository

set PUTTY_SESSION=extssh

set CVS_TAG=test-0-0-2

Now there is two ways to check out you data from the CVS. The both accomplish the same thing but the latter takes use of your stored session in the PuTTY application. The session dependent command requires that you in the PuTTY application specified the auto-login username in the connection portion.

ANT build environment

Without much introduction, this ANT target works nicely when the PuTTY Authentication Agent is active.

<target name="cvs-checkout">
        cvsRoot=" :ext:userid@ip_or_url:/usr/local/cvs/repository"

If you have followed the description to this point, you should be able to build you source code seemlessly.
