Super surveillance

The future is now – It is just not evenly divided so batten down the hatches

The digital evolution we see around us will lead to one thing and that is revolution. But what kind of revolution do we want? We must really pay attention because we cannot see the big picture. How do we engage in our privacy when life changing technology continuously cross the chasm. No technology comes without hard work and it is quite easy to predict what we are capable of in just a very limited time frame. The Gartner Hype Cycle shows us that every innovation takes up to 20 years to move from invention to pilot to general availability and then sometimes much later mainstream. All technologies arrives over time but often those mostly affected by it rarely ever see it coming…

The elusive technology future – Where is the Batman?

Bradley Manning verdict was guilty on all charges except ‘aiding the enemy’ – He basically faces a 90-year sentence for doing the right thing revealing a true story.  The National Security Agency (NSA) wants Edward Snowden so he cannot tell us something we already know. Khodorkovsky, Aung San Suu Kyi pardon my Christoph Meili. The British built Tempora and are the most surveilled people in the world. The french Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE)  have a database with all phone and internet traffic. Why does things like XKeyScore scare people. Did we not already know our government spy on us to get the really bad guys. Maybe it is time to stop focusing on the whistleblower and really consider what can be gained by the leak. All nations surveil and investigate to combat social benefit fraud, fly-tipping, fraudulent trading, hardened criminals and antisocial behavior, witness intimidation, fraudulent use of cash and things awful. We cannot stop nations like China from building metadata. Why should we not build metadata? Only those with something to hide should care about being surveilled. The Internet is our collective and a human right. The general performance of the Internet would be optimized if we accepted government surveillance.

Is the Batman a one man army of 360-degree surveillance?

A typical military spec lens enables you to see details 320 miles in any direction from 10.000 feet above the earth. This feed alone, with sophisticated software, will give you the ability to track what you need and see patterns that was once hidden. A behavioral recognition solution to automatically identify suspicious activity from video surveillance, see and identify facial and other non-verbal expressions of ill intent in context to available metadata. It is powerful, scalable and accurate. Consider you where able to see smarter and were allowed, with Google Glass project, to turn on the face recognition feature and full motion video analytics. Instantly look up metadata on your connections and the people you meet in life. Simply by looking at a person you would have access to basic interests, age, spoken languages, threat indicators and behavioral thermometers. You would know someone better before approaching them for the first time and have a chance to avoid situations and unwanted future events. A bit scary but hey we do it already on various social networks peeking into each others identity capital and to people we do not know.

Person of interest – Is IT the Batman?

At any given time there are 1,000 satellites orbiting our planet, but only 12 ‪known to us send back hi-res images. Internet is a global community, but its not for everyone. Various entrepreneurs try to change that and just consider the Google Loon project and how easy it would be to device balloons with cameras and facilitate 3D rendering of our world. Google Earth would be a real loon game ;) Each day we pass approximately 400 webcams streaming through the Internet and we already know our cellphones spy on us. For the last two decades, large aerostat balloons have been maintained by the U.S. Air Force in a Persistent Ground Surveillance Systems (PGSS). Department of Homeland Security have apprehended at least 300 criminals and intercepted as many as 50 planned attacks due to research working on surveillance metadata. Everyone will over time be held accountable for their personal identity capital maybe by 2050 AI will be our best friend.

Sharing vs. privacy – Do you find the truth on Twitter? @TheBatcave #ff

Mostly everyone are a part of PRISM including Apple, Google, and Microsoft as such the operating systems that we trusted to safeguard our personal information are all part of the program. So the PRISM project know your habits and your sociogram to estimate your personal threat level. We share everything with the corporate. Our digital footprint is huge and cannot be kept hidden from those who really want to know. Only 7.6% of the CEO’s on the Fortune 500-list have an online social network profile and only 4% are on twitter. Why do they think they can live so large and leave so little for the rest of us? Not that they have anything to hide ;)  The intelligence that can be derived from available data like interests, nationality, date of birth, aliases, ISP accounts, dialog with connections, fingerprints and maybe even genetic data and credit card transactions is all of value. If they also have access to our credit card transactions they would certainly have the ability to troll cyberspace to sniff out threats from terrorists and other potential dangers to society. It may just be that surveillance is an integrated part of our future way of life and not just a powerful anti-terror weapon.

Set IT free – Are we the Batman? Are you the Batman?

It is an expensive National Security Agency initiative to search the world’s communication networks for security threats prompting intelligence officials and lawmakers to raise questions about its funding and its future. Top secret military software projects and programs like #SEDB, #Marina, #Prism, #Noforn, #Scissors, #Pinwale, #Sigad or #iros3 are all quite expensive. I once read an article that over 5.000 robots was in active service in the Iraq and Afghanistan war. Maybe its time to commercialize on some of all this deployed technology. Wiki-pedia is a good example of how great something can be when its really set free.  Total cost of ownership on wiki-pedia as global Internet encyclopedia is 1mio dollar per year and have replaced a multibillion-dollar industry with a greatly improved ecological footprint. Due to the philosophical ethos on how updates are implemented wiki-pedia is quite extensive and accurate and it is open source. Sometimes brilliant software only require a few good men or a one man army can single line code so that IT projects may one day create the first real superhero.

My Lumigon GorillaGlass ICEpower anti-print

Not too recently a very dear friend surprised me with early access and the opportunity to beta test a brand new cell phone. It was a Lumigon T2 Corning® Gorilla® Glass, that is not unlike a legendary foil treat bag to a techie like me :) :) Years ago I bought my very own Sony Walkman®, that also got me very happy. But to play the same song twice on repeat was kinda backwards. New technology excites me especially when it is about intelligent design. The Lumigon activity button in the top part of the front display is simply ingenious and smart in nature. It can be configured to activate certain functions depending on the situation. Long click the activity button and it turns on the flashlight but if your in a conference call, a long click will mute your speaker.

The thrilling experience of unboxing a Lumigon T2

The box itself is really exclusive. The soft high quality material inside the box emphasize luxury and match perfectly the design of the phone as well as a stylish in-ear headset with a standard 3.5 mm connector. The back lid of the T2 fits with precision the elegant steel frame but it took me a couple of times hatching the lid to the frame to get use to the fact that you must use a bit of force to have the corners click in place. The weight is really nice and it gives you a feel of quality and robustness and not the sassy plastic feel many other mobile phones currently represent. The classy stainless-steel frame, easy to access buttons and the anti-print Gorilla glass really gives an overall look and feel of the Lumigon T2 being up there among the best.

Stylish, elegant and easy but what about performance?

When it comes to hardware muscles the Lumigon T2 performs quite well with the SnapDragon™ dual-core processor combined with 1GB RAM and Android (4) Ice Cream Sandwich is more than enough to give a smooth user experience without occasional lags while running multiple apps and live wall papers. The cell features an 8-MP high-quality camera and you can take self-portraits in HD with the 720p front-facing camera as well as a backside illumination sensor (BSI) for capturing light that in turn allows great details and colors in the photos. Listening to podcast and music on a Lumigon is a soothing experience. The on-board sound system ICEpower® is rich, powerful and produced by Bang & Olufsen. Though the T2 is pretty much a good average on battery performance it still manages to go a full day without having to recharge. For more in detail information visit Lumigon.com.

Looking forward to Google Glass

As I expected, the Lumigon T2 offers as good a web browsing experience as it is possible to get on a mobile device right now. Yes… I know way high expectations but Jarvis not there yet ;) Very much looking forward to try Google Talk on Glass later 2013. I do not know the product roadmap but hope that they prioritize alignment to the next and the next version of the very agile Android platform as the Lumigon seems quite capable to fully embrace.

screenshot-lumigon-calendar-sync screenshot-lumigon-adjust-widget

I’m really enthusiastic about the native calendar as it is easy to access and very useful. The native calendar seamlessly integrate with Google and Microsoft Exchange Outlook and with a free tool like Active Sync everything is synchronized on my cell :) In addition the Lumigon T2 synchronize contact details with Google :) That is very handy if I ever loose my phone again. The ability to customize widget size to tiles is also a very nice touch by the Lumigon middleware.

Early Verdict

Using the T2 over three months it is always exciting when a new update is released. One of the things that I find is a great advantage is the feedback button. This feature gives us the opportunity to get in direct contact with the team behind Lumigon to share feedback, provide bug details and give them ideas to what features we would wish for in the future. This is a great advantage and it is cool to know that behind every great tech there is a great team working, fixing and maintaining keeping the platform alive.

So reflecting on the past months and appx. 7.440 minutes of active usage not counting youtube, radio, the occasional podcast or stream the anti-fingerprint coating has pretty good contingency. As I do not know how many kilogram of raw material the T2 represent I imagine it must be considerable and my verdict is that it is worth every penny. Any professional who want to acquire a new mobile phone the Lumigon T2 gets my warmest recommendation. As far as I am concerned, anything Lumigon does to make their model look sleeker is just gravy as it seems that the T2 already makes the average user turn his head. It’s a balance of performance and portability at a reasonable price and so far the T2 fits the bill.

Kindle E Ink display

What is your favorite book… This is a question I have asked many in the past… I have read many great books I would not otherwise have read if I had not asked and bought the book. In turn I would face the dread to select which book to read. We as a society have invested many fortunes in battery technology but this far not been able to produce anything handy with endless capability or any longevity what so ever… Not close to general available anyways. The Kindle takes a different approach and is a strong example on how to save energy rendering tons of information not unlike a real book. The graphite display works great in direct sunlight but gives in with twilight in the evening as such a small LED keeps my battery hard at work. Though it has a bit slow reaction time turning pages in contrast to this video my Kindle keeps battery for 8 weeks without using the LED flash light or WiFi.

A great book experience can in some instances be compared to a long lost friend. It can cultivate your inner most thoughts in ways only shared with true friends and inspire you to dream. A great book can have my back for weeks at a time, kinda like a great friend, I trust my Kindle enables me to read at convenience. As far as I remember technology have been a natural part of my life. As a return for a favor someone gave me a hardcover vampire book. Read it twice. That was last fiction book I read in a long time until last summer…

Time is your most valuable asset so why not read the best books recommended by friends, mostly read or referenced. The Kindle let you read through thousands of pages in an intuitive and friendly natural reading interface. Turning pages back and forward can be activated with both your right and left hand. I use Calibre as E-book management tool and to convert source files into the open .mobi format. Mobi files can be loaded while recharging the battery using a USB 2.0 – micro connector cable. My Kindle is a 6″ diagonal E Ink® electronic paper display with a 1200 x 824 pixel resolution at 167 PPI in a gray scale and a very light weight design.

When was the last time you made friends with your inner elephant… While it is winter why not kick back, take it real slow and find some time to read.  It just might put a smile on your face ;)

Complete list of single line text emoticons

This is a list of notable and commonly used emoticons that is textual portrayals of a writer’s mood or facial expression or simply just to convey emotions. With emotions one can clarify or depict the actual intention that otherwise would have been tough to interpret. Not saying that we have use for the Homer Simpson (_8(|) emoticon but it is good to know it is there.

The first emoticons were published on March 30, 1881 by US satirical magazine Puck that called it typographical art. Check out the historical magazine as the edition was made available by Wikimedia.

Inspired by Rives who has been given the honor of being one of the first to write web2.0 typographical fairy tales. Here is my contribution to web2.0 poetry written to a very special person. A love story with mixed emoticons.

All I wish for Christmas

What do you wish for Christmas? That is a frequently asked question these days… maybe I should wish that foursquare fixed the ‘add location’ bug on my old school android with extendable keyboard. Heck that is not nearly ambitious enough! Does democracy exist in a pack of lions and tigers? Certainly they are majestic animals but consider their ferocious nature. Perhaps more so among whales and dolphins and probably a lot more. Sad enough their voice is not heard in the European Union. If one can wish for anything no reason to be modest nor subtle… I wish that more fish would stay in the sea.

A funny story about Denmark is that buying manual work labor “orange” without paying taxes is generally accepted by the public. Somewhat often in social networks like facebook someone shouts “Do I know a plummer?” or “Do I know a carpenter?”. I have helped plenty people but somehow this rule of “orange” payment does not apply to information technology. I wish to have as much free time to do volunteer work as my friends ask me for.

Often some brand like Apple contends that some innovation infringes patents and demand payment of royalties. When big brands dictate stagnation of innovation the laggards stay laggards. I wish that Creative Commons leapfrogs the chasm and becoming a commonly used license model. The license model makes sense and is easy to understand and implement.

At the danish So Ein Ding awards 2012 a jury member from Hardisken uttered words that any entrepreneur could have build an enterprise solution like Polsag. It is obvious that the right integrated group can platform out from the right code base and create complex deliverables in no time. It always makes sense to spread risk in programs and overspecialization is to be avoided. I wish the danish politicians hire a decent CIO to simplify and standardize organizational work process practices in the public sector to act more agile and collaborate smarter.

All over our world atrocities occur daily. The victims are any gender of all ages, sexual orientation, religion, color and financial status. I wish most citizens of earth would support great causes like Amnesty Internatioal – Write for rights and author more snailmail letters to foreign leaders.

The mouse is threatened. At least for pointing the cursor. What happened to that concept keyboard from Mozilla? If we make software for image recognition in the Google Glass project everyone can spot ill intend. If these indicators are accepted as behavioral synergies, augmented reality system (ARS) we will learn us to learn more about each other. I wish for a smarter android cell that harness vibrations and other “junk” energy from the environment to power the gadget. An android with multiple SIM’s, high quality in motion camera and a chipset to monitor my health, helps me sleep and wake up, eat right and observe my surrounding environment like air quality, noise, early warning on natural disasters, early detection of infections microbes and even chemical attacks in a all open global Internet.

The pace of change in technology is accelerating that is undeniable. The steady onslaught of Moore’s Law and its eerie regularity is a most profound example of exponentiality. At this rate of change all implies radical social disruption many times before the mid-point of the 21st Century. I wish that the best products sells the best and that more B2B are wise enough to act on gut feeling.

Financial market uncertainty is a compilation of many things. One issue often overlooked is the ballooning unfunded liabilities due to the aging of the population. When everyone wants to build a bank it is due to the general populations lack of trust in the financial system. Bitcoin is an alternative fiscal system but that will not work an has proved hackable many times and in the future. I wish that banks be mindful in business engagement and more proactive in reviews to business and consumers.

In Denmark some are used to sway the unions. They spend huge amounts of money on marketing and administration. Any real entrepreneur would always offer part of his business or share the fortune. With ambidextrous guidance everyone helped create something inspiring are stars in the same skymap. I wish everyone great work ethics and that a genuine decency incentive is enough.

So we have a 3D printer in space and also one in Lyngby, Denmark. We will all soon have access to this technology. The future design of anything from houses to guns is the intellectual capital of everything. Along with alien soil these blueprints are future contraband. I wish for a world full of life and to see it all.

We live and work in a world that’s so overloaded with information, communication, and gadgets that all fight for that irresistible and constant tug to text, tweet, status update and check our email. That trend is not likely to change anytime soon.

The Internet of Things envisions a world in which physical objects, information, and internet services blend into each other as such this global system of technology can be considered an emerging super organism. The Internet of Things consists of all computers and data centers in the cloud, household appliances, traffic systems, electric lines and cables, buildings, satellites, ocean buoys and ships and all 6 billion humans.

I realize now that I could present 1,000 additional things to wish for. Not to mention the several innovations in space any of which could have significant effects on our everyday operations and family life.

Embrace the swarm and the competitive advantage belongs to those who learn how to embrace decentralized points of control. Not only because it can be highly amusing, but because it can provide interesting insights to what the priorities and biases were in the past. And if as a race are strong and work in unity we might even trigger a whole new level of adoption and technology. I wish to spend my life and grow old with YOU baby my love.

Happy holidays and Merry Christmas

Howto use SSH with CVS via PuTTY

PuTTY is a free application that implementation and facilitate the Telnet and SSH protocol for Win32 platforms. Plink is a command-line interface to the PuTTY back-end. Along with PuTTY the PuTTY Key Generator and the PuTTY Authentication Agent are products in combination that accomplish the task with CVS and optionally ANT and a working security layer to your build your application here as an example in a JAVA environment.

In easy words basic software crypto security while communicating with an online service.

Howto prerequisites :

PuTTY : Free implementation of Telnet and SSH.
CVS : A Concurrent Versions System.
ANT : Part of the Apache Jakarta Project.

There are three stages in building a secure and generic make environment.

  • Enable the SSH protocol and this is done by setting up an automated log on procedure.
  • Store a public key on the server to make sure SSH communication is not rejected by the server.
  • Develop an appropriate target in your ‘make’ environment to checkout files.

A fourth step is included in this blog but only relevant if your build environment is ANT.

Automated SSH logon procedure

The automated procedure is based on the PuTTY products. Usally when one open a telnet connection the contacted server asks for an user id and a password to authenticate and validate integrity. This is a problem one want to automate his/hers CVS checkout procedures. To bypass this obstacle in a secure fashion you will want to generate a RSA key-pair and make PuTTY recognize those an ensure that they are uses as passphrase.

[acc_item title=”Step 1: Generate RSA key”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click puttygen.exe

Press the Generate button.

Move the mouse around (random seeding).

Enter a passphrase.

Store both keys locally.

Copy the key to the clipboard.[/column]

[acc_item title=”Step 2: Create a reusable session”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click putty.exe

Create a session and select SSH as the protocol to use.

Click authentication in the tree to the left.

Browse to locate your private key.

Save the session under a meaningful name.[/column]

[acc_item title=”Step 3: Setup authentication”]

[column col=”1/4″]Double click pageant.exe

The Agent should now be active in the system tray.

Click to open the Agent.

Click Add Key and browse to locate your private key.

[column col=”1/4″]howto_pageant[/column][/acc_item]

[acc_item title=”Step 4: Activate keys for automation”]The Agent must start-up along with windows in order to seamlessly complete an automate checkout.

Create a shortcut for pageant.exe, right click and edit the shortcut’s properties.

Add the path to destination path to your private key(s).

Notice if your key(s) are protected by a passphrase you will be prompted on startup…[/acc_item]

All steps above are required if you use simple .bat scripts or an ANT build environment. To sum up the neat little util PuTTY Authentication Agent does all the magic.

Store public key on server

Telnet to the CVS server. The server is a linux platform so you start in your home directory.
Create the folder ‘.ssh’ (if it does not exist already) and make sure properties are reasonable. Inside ‘.ssh’ create the file authorized_keys (if it does not exist already).

You can edit and append your public key to this file by typing :

vi authorized_keys
Double click your mouse to paste the clipboard (public key) and press esc.

Now the server will recognize your automated logon procedure and you are able to use the CVS Win32 client to gain secure access to the concurrent versions system.

Build environment

When the CVS Win32 client is to access a remote repository by our automated log on procedure usage of the PuTTY application Plink is required. Plink is the command line tool representation of PuTTY. Since PuTTY is a GUI application it is not designed to interpret terminal control codes send from the server. This was introduced in the Plink application and Plink is sufficient for us to accomplish our goal.

As for the CVS Win32 client, Plink needs to be added to the environment PATH variable. Lets assume that the cvs.exe and plink.exe applications are stored in the folder E:util the command would look like below. Adjust the path in accordance to your own environment.

set PATH=E:util;%PATH%

Batch script environment

We have to tell the CVS Win32 client to use the Plink application. Furthermore we need to define what protocol to use, who should access the server, where the CVS server is located etc.

set CVS_RSH=plink.exe

set PROTOCOL=ext
set USERID=userid
set URL=ip_or_url
set CVS_LOCATION=/usr/local/cvs/repository

set PUTTY_SESSION=extssh

set CVS_TAG=test-0-0-2

Now there is two ways to check out you data from the CVS. The both accomplish the same thing but the latter takes use of your stored session in the PuTTY application. The session dependent command requires that you in the PuTTY application specified the auto-login username in the connection portion.

ANT build environment

Without much introduction, this ANT target works nicely when the PuTTY Authentication Agent is active.

<target name="cvs-checkout">
        cvsRoot=" :ext:userid@ip_or_url:/usr/local/cvs/repository"

If you have followed the description to this point, you should be able to build you source code seemlessly.
